Today’s subject is a little bit off my normal scope on PajamaMom but I think it’s an important one to talk about. When I was pregnant with my first child boy2001 I didn’t have access to the information we all do now. I didn’t know many moms and those I did, never mentioned a nasty little thing called hemorrhoids.

My pregnancy was uneventful, I made sure to eat well and drink lots of water to keep things moving on down the digestive tract. When I went into labor, almost everything went wrong. It’s was almost midnight, my husband had been asleep and was grumpy, my water broke all over the floor, couch and the coupons I’d been clipping. We hit EVERY red light, he took me to the hospital’s main entrance – which was closed – instead of the Emergency Room. For a minute, I didn’t think I was going to make it and I was sure this baby was going to go flying out of me!

Well, finally we got settled in and I was ready to push. It was fast and furious, and when I pushed for the last time and boy2001 came out I said, “that’s it?” It went so fast that I didn’t realize what had happened at the moment.

Boy2001 was born within the hour of my first labor pain and water breaking. With the intensity I had a little accident shall we say. I realized with my 2ND and third child that I was pushing the wrong end that first time! The end result was I popped a hemorrhoid which I can tell you hurt more than anything else in the weeks after delivery. At that time, I became familiar with the brand TUCKS.

They handed me my tubs of TUCKS and some literature about hemorrhoids. My nurses brought me basins to sit in to relieve the sensations of pain, itching and general ewwy feeling I had. The baths worked temporarily but they were a pain AND I didn’t want to do one more thing when I got home so I got more familiar with the TUCKS.

It’s not very fun to keep yourself clean after using the restroom when you’re bleeding like crazy.  My solution was very mild soap in the shower twice a day and plenty of  TUCKS (medicated pads and itch ointment) applications throughout. For allergy sufferers, spring can be a very frustrating time, those who can, head indoors for relief.  But that may be the worst thing they can do – indoor air quality can be even worst.  My husband sometimes has trouble breathing, we’re not sure if it’s dust, pet or pollen but there is often something that gets to his throat. 

I’m always careful to clean without kicking up the dust but what would be the biggest help would be to upgrade to a laminate floor… our carpet is the major dust/allergen keeper in the house.

Dr. Neil Schachter, M.D., past president of the American Lung Association of the City of New York, suggests a “home health check-up” to help make your home a healthier place to live.  He recommends avoiding cleaning products that contain ammonia or chlorine, and limiting your pet’s access to certain areas of the home, including the bedroom.

1. Houseplants…a clean air ally – Common indoor houseplants, such as bamboo plants, English ivy and peace lily, can provide a natural way to help fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution by absorbing some potentially harmful gases. A six-inch potted green plant can clean a room of excess carbon dioxide in eight hours².
2. Lay area rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting – Wall-to-wall carpeting can attract and hold indoor dirt, pollen, pet hair and mold spores and many contain chemicals.  Vacuuming can remove some surface dirt, but often, the vacuum can actually push pollutants deeper into carpet fibers.  Area rugs are best since they can be picked up and cleaned thoroughly.
3. Leave shoes outside – Avoid bringing contaminated outdoor pollutants indoors by removing your shoes before entering the home.  Wearing shoes indoors can track particles that can become airborne, including animal dander, mold spores, pollen and bacteria.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not medically inclined…  I’m scared of blood, tears and pain in general.  When Mom Central asked for testers for the AHA Family & Friends CPR Anytime I jumped at the chance.  Although I was certified years ago when I was in the military, I never really felt comfortable or like I got enough instruction or practice… it was just a run through, 2 seconds with a blow up doll and out you go.  Don’t forget to pick up your card on the way out.

The American Heart Association is improving that situation by giving everyone more time and opportunity to practice life saving skills.  In fact, 20 minutes is all it takes to go through a DVD demonstration of hands only CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in addition to all the reactionary things like when to call 911 an how to take charge and recruit help if available.

All of this is wonderful but the truly innovative part of the kit is the Mini Anne.  Easy to inflate and incredibly good as a visual / touchable aide.  I can now say I’ve perfected the technique of covering the mouth and blowing and tilting perfectly.  While performing chest compressions, the clicking is a wonderful gage as to timing and going along with the DVD gives a good indication of how long you’ll have to keep it up.

I talked to the kids about CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.  I know not everyone agrees but I like to expose my kids to things on my terms in hopes that they will have a better understanding if they witness something.  Boy2001 has heard about CPR but wasn’t sure what it was, he practiced a bit with Mini Anne.  All of them were on the edge of their seats watching me follow along with the DVD — hopefully they won’t get too scared if they ever see this in real life!
